Taking the first step is not easy. People often come to therapy when they feel they've run out of options. The thought of meeting with a complete stranger and sharing their deepest fears, relationship struggles, or darkest moods may seem overwhelming. At the same time, taking that first step means that YOU are in charge. YOU are in control of what you choose to share and the goals you wish to achieve.
The most important first step for the therapist is to create a safe space where you can share openly and honestly and trust that you are being heard, understood, and accepted.
In many ways, working with your therapist is collaborative, based on a shared vision toward healing and self-discovery. Your individualized therapy may combine techniques from various approaches that are unique to your situation and needs. Ultimately, the highest priority is to help you honor and empower "the best and most beautiful parts" of yourself!
